Blackbeard, the Original Rooster

Blackbeard, the Original Rooster

Blackbeard, the Rooster.

Everyone needs a guy like this for their flock!

Blackbeard totally rules the yard, keeps the peace, and leads by example to teach the young roosters how to act. He is here to stay… He is the absolute best rooster I’ve ever had, and he was the first rooster.

My original flock of 10 girls included two hens that really wanted to try hatching some eggs, but I did not have a Rooster… their eggs would’ve never hatched. I tried breaking the broody-ness at every turn, but they were determined.

I decided to let them do what they want(because, when I asked Lana what to do, she asked if I wanted to just let them hatch some!?), and so I helped them out by acquiring 3 fertilized eggs from Svetlana, at Heritage Hen Farm. I picked a Blue Egg, a Green Egg, and a Tan egg. All 3 HATCHED!! (good team work, chicken mamma’s!)

Blackbeard hatched out of the blue egg. This leads me to believe his mother was a Aruacana, and from his looks I’d say daddy was a GLW(Golden Laced Wyandotte) he looks like a spitting image of the GLW roo there… and Blackbeard is aprox. 3 years old right now.

Some roosters can be mean, but not this guy! Blackbeard has never, ever once, shown any aggression to me, or any people or children. He shows the ladies where to find food, and protects them from predators. He eats last once the ladies are done, and he is an exemplary illustration of a great rooster. He doesn’t like me handling him, but has never harmed me for it. We “get” each other 😉 He knows I’m the boss, and he loves me for bringing the food 😉

Cheers to Blackbeard!!

Baby Blackbeard on the right, with a very protective chicken Momma!
